Tsavo in February
February is Tsavo with the thermostat pushed to the top of its range. It is the hottest month on the thirty-year card and nearly the driest of this window, and the heat is doing exactly the work you want done at the waterholes.

February is the strongest month of the short dry window: 32.2°C days, very little rain, and game held tight against permanent water. Treat it like a desert trip and it pays you back.
The hottest month, and why that helps
The averages read 32.2°C by day, the annual maximum, over 29 mm of rain on 5 rain days, with nights of 21.4°C that never ask for more than a light layer. This is the same dry window January opened; the one thing February changes is the temperature, and with it the intensity at the water.
Heat is the engine of the viewing here. With the last short-rain pools gone, the animals run out of alternatives, and Aruba Dam, the Voi River, the Galana and the lodge waterholes turn from possibilities into appointments.
East against West when it is this warm
In the East the open red country is at its most photogenic now, with elephants powdering themselves back to terracotta within hours of any shower and oryx shimmering on the plains. In the West, Mzima Springs runs at the same volume in every season, so the springs walk works as well now as ever, and the floodlit waterholes below Kilaguni and Ngulia do their best business on hot dry nights. Dawn from the Chyulu side is also your best chance of Kilimanjaro before the haze builds.
Working the clock
Structure the day around the gates: in at 06:00, off the roads by late morning, out again for the final two hours of light. Kenya Wildlife Service parks are single-use-plastic-free, so carry a refillable bottle and more water than you expect to want.
Weather risk stays low into late February in most years, but do not let the trip slip toward mid-March, because the long rains sit directly behind this month. Book waterhole-facing rooms a few months ahead; the rest of the inventory is easier.
