Flying to Tsavo: what actually flies, and the train that competes

The scheduled picture: Safarilink and the coast circuit

Safarilink is the scheduled operator into Tsavo, and its published timetable, checked on flysafarilink.com on 12 September 2026, is refreshingly concrete. Flight 013 leaves Nairobi Wilson daily at 07:30 and lands in Tsavo West at 08:20; the return, flight 014, is off the ground at 08:30 and back at Wilson by 09:50. In high season, which Safarilink defines as 16 December to 31 March and 1 July to 31 October, an afternoon rotation is added: flight 015 out at 14:00 and down at 14:50, returning as 016 at 15:00 to land at Wilson at 16:15.

Those flights put down at the Kilaguni and Finch Hattons airstrips inside Tsavo West, and at Ol Donyo Lodge's strip in the Chyulu Hills on the same rotation. Which strip gets served first varies with the day's routing, so treat the published times as approximate for your specific airstrip and confirm exact timings with Safarilink operations the afternoon before you travel.

From the coast, Mombasa Air Safari calls at Tsavo West on its circuit from Mombasa and Diani towards Amboseli and the Mara, with the Diani departure leaving Ukunda around 08:00. The catch for couples: the airline requires a minimum of four passengers for the Tsavo leg, and if only two of you are booked you can still fly by paying for the two empty seats. Baggage on any of these light aircraft services is 15 kilos per person in a soft bag, hand luggage included.

Tsavo East has no scheduled service at all. Its airstrips, from Voi Park near the main gate to Ithumba in the far north, see charters and lodge-arranged flights only, so a fly-in safari on the East side means chartering or booking a lodge that packages the flight for you.

Timetables were checked on 12 September 2026. Light aircraft schedules in Kenya shift with demand and season, so reconfirm within a week or two of travel.

The train: the option no other big park has

The Madaraka Express runs three times a day in each direction between Nairobi and Mombasa, and the line passes straight between the two parks, with stations at Voi beside Tsavo East and Mtito Andei for Tsavo West. Only one departure is genuinely useful: the 08:00 Inter-County service, which is the only train stopping at both Mtito Andei and Voi. The 15:00 and 22:00 Express trains call at Voi only, and the afternoon train from Nairobi does not reach Voi until 18:48, by which time the park gates have been shut for three quarters of an hour.

So plan around one train a day each way. From Mombasa, the 08:00 arrives at Voi at 09:49, leaving you most of a day in the park. From Nairobi, the same departure reaches Mtito Andei at 10:50 for Tsavo West and Voi at 12:02 for Tsavo East. Fares are the great equaliser: unlike park fees, foreigners pay exactly what Kenyans pay, KSh 440 in economy from Mombasa to Voi and KSh 1,050 from Nairobi to Voi. The train only finishes the job if someone meets you. Voi station sits about 6 km outside Voi town, and the gate is a further drive beyond that, so arrange a lodge pickup or a taxi in advance. The airstrips and the charter layer

Tsavo East's airstrips map neatly onto its lodges. Voi Park airstrip serves the busy Voi sector: it is 4 km from Voi Safari Lodge and 1 km from Manyatta Camp, with most gate-area properties using it. Satao Camp has its own strip in the central park, Ashnil Aruba sits beside the Aruba strip, the Galdessa camps on the Galana use Lugard Falls South, Galana Crocodile Camp uses Sala Gate in the far east, and the three Sheldrick camps in the Northern Area are all served by the Ithumba strip, which is effectively the only practical way to reach that sector.

In Tsavo West, Kilaguni and Finch Hattons take the scheduled Safarilink traffic: Kilaguni airstrip is adjacent to Kilaguni Serena and also serves Severin Safari Camp and the Kitani Bandas, while Finch Hattons has its own strip. Ngulia Safari Lodge sits beside its own charter strip on the escarpment, Voyager Ziwani uses the Ziwani strip in the west, and Kamboyo strip at park headquarters serves the KWS self-catering houses. Between the parks, the Taita Hills strip serves Salt Lick, Taita Hills Safari Resort and Lions Bluff.

Charters are quoted per aircraft, not per seat, so you pay for the plane whether it is full or not, and no operator publishes a standard Tsavo rate. As a rule the flight will rival the cost of several lodge nights, which is why charters make sense mainly for the exclusive-use camps, Galdessa and the Ithumba trio, where the whole property is booked anyway and the camp arranges the flight.

One thing fly-in visitors consistently underestimate: you still need a vehicle at the other end. Kenya Wildlife Service requires you to stay in your car inside the park, so without a lodge vehicle waiting at the strip you have no legal way to move at all. Fly-in rates normally bundle airstrip transfers and game drives; confirm that yours does before you pay.

The honest comparison: drive, train or fly?

Tsavo is the one great Kenyan park where flying is a comfort, not a necessity. Nairobi to Mtito Andei is 233 km and about three hours on the A109, Mombasa to Bachuma Gate is 110 km and about an hour and a half, and the train undercuts everything at KSh 440 from the coast. Compare that with the Mara or the far northern parks, where the road alternative is a genuinely hard day, and the arithmetic is plain: fly to Tsavo because your lodge package is built around it or because it stitches your itinerary together, not because you cannot get there otherwise.

The connection argument is the strongest one. Safarilink's morning arrival connects onward to afternoon flights serving the Maasai Mara, Nanyuki, Lewa, Loisaba and Samburu, so Tsavo West slots into a multi-park air circuit without ever touching the highway. For a Finch Hattons or Kilaguni Serena guest on a packaged itinerary, the 50-minute flight against a four-hour drive is an easy call someone else has already made for you.

For everyone else, the ground wins. Self-drivers need their vehicle inside the park anyway, so flying just strands you at a strip. Budget travellers have the cheapest park access in Kenya sitting on the rails. And if you are coming from the coast for a short safari, the road through Bachuma or the morning train to Voi both beat the four-passenger minimum lottery of the coast air circuit.

• Self-driving: drive. Your vehicle is your game-drive vehicle, and the main routes to both parks are tarmac.
• Budget and independent travellers: take the 08:00 Inter-County train to Voi or Mtito Andei and arrange a lodge pickup.
• Fly-in lodge packages in Tsavo West: Safarilink daily to Kilaguni and Finch Hattons, transfers bundled.
• Tsavo East's Northern Area and the exclusive-use camps: charter, arranged by the camp, to Ithumba or Lugard Falls South.
• Multi-park itineraries: fly, using the morning connections through Wilson to the Mara, Laikipia and Samburu.
• Couples flying from the coast: check the four-passenger minimum before you count on Mombasa Air Safari.
